In 2023, our team embarked on a data visualization project to illuminate the relationship between knee wrap usage, competitive performance, and the experience levels of powerlifters worldwide. Using Tableau, we combined multiple datasets—from global tournament results and athlete profiles to equipment purchase patterns—to create an interactive map and accompanying charts that brought these insights to life. The goal was to help our client, a specialized sports equipment retailer, make more informed business decisions and refine their product recommendations, ultimately driving revenue growth.

The visualization focused on comparing raw competition metrics—such as average placement, competitor age, and squat weights in kilograms—against “knee wrap metrics,” a category we derived to represent the degree of knee wrap adoption and its correlation to improved outcomes on the platform. By overlaying country-level tournament data and applying a consistent color-coding system, we highlighted regions where knee wraps were prevalent and closely tied to higher placement and potentially more advanced lifters. For example, certain countries in Eastern Europe and East Asia displayed a strong positive relationship between wrap usage and average performance and age, suggesting that more seasoned lifters in these areas may be turning to wraps to maintain an edge in competition.

Moreover, the Tableau dashboard allowed for dynamic interaction and filtering. Users could hover over specific countries to reveal detailed metrics—average squatting weights, mean competitor age, and median tournament placements—both with and without wraps. This empowered the client’s decision-makers to see where knee wrap endorsements and educational marketing campaigns might yield the greatest returns. The narrative was straightforward: knee wraps were more than just an accessory for specific powerlifting communities; they represented a strategic advantage correlated with enhanced results and higher-level competitors.

After implementing the insights from this visualization into their sales strategies, product placement, and athlete sponsorships, the client reported a notable 25% increase in revenue. This growth was attributed to a more targeted approach: providing specialized training guides alongside knee wrap purchases, focusing advertising and outreach efforts on countries and demographics showing the strongest wrap-to-performance correlation, and partnering with competitive lifters to endorse and demonstrate best practices. The visualization didn’t merely present static data; it guided strategy and inspired confidence in investing in the right markets and equipment.
